Poetry, short stories, plays, novels, history, philosophy, science, not necessarily in that order, classics that are worthy of discussion, current and past, western and non-western, these are the works we discuss. The discussion is what is most important. We discuss these works to enlarge our understanding of the ideas that shape our culture and gain a deeper appreciation for what it means to be human.

An informal philosophy group with discussions focused on readings selected by participating members.
No philosophical background needed. We throw out topics with a philosophical bent and then we vote on which one to discuss. Some may have also heard of it as "Socrates Cafe". This is about our own philosophies of life and not necessarily what other philosophers have said or written. The first Philosophers' Café of the modern era, Café des Phares, is located in the Place de la Bastille, the historic centre of the French Revolution. Europe has a long history of café society and salons, informal g …

Engage in lively discussion and debate around Nicholas Taleb's Black Swan Theory, which states that: - There is a disproportionate role of high-impact, hard to predict, rare events that are beyond the realm of normal expectations in history, science, finance and technology - It is difficult to compute the probability of such rare events using scientific methods (due to the nature of small probabilities), and - There is a psychological headwind that makes people individually and collectively blin …

… It's a bummer when you go to a book club, and it turns into a philosophy lecture led by the one random person in the group who has read the book twelve times, wrote a peer-reviewed article on how the author's perspective shaped modern society, and is (self-labeled as) better-read than 99% of the population. So please don't be that person. This is the general schedule of reading for the year: January - Vol. 1 "Swann's Way" - Overture and Combray February - Vol. 1 "Swann's Way" - Swann in Love a …
Hey there! It's been a few years since undergrad and I'm starting to miss seminars. Reading and discussing difficult books with a small group of equally dedicated individuals is a pretty wonderful experience, and seemingly hard to come by outside of an academic setting. I'm not quite ready to quit my job and head back to school, so I thought I'd try and find other like minded folks--too cheap for grad school, but missing the experience of reading in an academic style. I have a comparative litera …

...says so... NOPE!!! What is science? Good science includes evidence that is testable, demonstrable, observable, measurable, repeatable, etc. So why do we insist on holding onto hypothesis like evolution when all we ever observe or demonstrate prove evolution is impossible. You won't find anybody saying "because the bible says so" in this discussion unless it comes from an evolutionist! lol No, here Young Earth Creationists pose hard facts already accepted by evolutionists and show …

The philosophy of the BAFS is to allow a network of wonderful Assistant Organizers to thrive and coordinate film outings at least every other week. Our goal is that this horizontal arrangement can continue, and that potential member hosts will schedule outings in the South, Eas …
