We will meet every other week (unless people want to meet more) to discuss great works of philosophy. I will outline the readings to get us started, but then we will open it up to the group to see what interests everyone. The readings will be kept short so that you can jump in when you have the time. We will mostly meet around Hollywood (suggestions are welcome for locations) and will be trying out some different times at first to see what works for members.

This is a great group for anyone interested in the most important connection in the history of thought. Two very profound areas of philosophy and thinking emerged in civilization -- The East and The West. There are so many interesting intersections but there have only been a handful of thinkers like Carl Jung or Herman Hesse that have let these traditions speak to each other. Our exploration is more than "he said, she said." We will generate a new way of looking at the world through our journey.
PHILOSOPHY is the topic at this friendly, nearly ten-year old group. We sit in a circle and discuss a philosophical question we voted on by email. If you love a good, impassioned yet respectful and rational conversation with like-minded people, join us!

If you feel alone in your head pondering the nature of reality, infinite realities, quantum entanglement, gravity, spacetime, dark energy, and the like, consider joining this group for some friendly thinking and discussion. My hope is to create an exciting, nurturing environment, where we can be openly curious, and circulate among ourselves clips and pieces we've been watching/reading. As a side note, I am not a scientist--I just love to learn. This group welcomes beginners, experts, and all t …
PHILOSOPHY is the topic at this friendly, five-year old group. We sit in a circle and discuss a philosophical question we voted on by email. Sometimes this topic is taken from an issue of Philosophy Now magazine (the current issue or a past issue). Other times, the question comes from a philosophical conundrum that has been on the mind of some member of our group, who then emailed the topic to me. If you love a good, impassioned yet respectful and rational conversation with like-minded people …

"Great people talk about IDEAS. Average people talk about THINGS. Small people talk about OTHER PEOPLE." --Tobias S. Gibson Are you tired of repetitive, maddeningly superficial "small talk"? Does endless talk about sports figures and celebrities bore you out of your wits? Would you prefer instead to discuss the ideas that shaped history? If you answered "yes", you are cordially invited a Pasadena discussion group. This meet-up will be an intellectual oasis, a refuge for those who wish t …

Science is fun again! The Natural Philosophy Alliance (NPA) is a world-wide think-tank and scientific organization whose members have one thing in common: they have studied very thoroughly mainstream science including relativity, the big bang, plate tectonics, and have concluded that there are fundamental flaws in these theories that must be rectified. The NPA's goal is to seek truth in science while allowing for competing theories to co-exist letting the best to grow and flourish through the un …
Inspired by Christopher Phillips' books, scores of people are meeting for these modern version of Socratic dialogue. These are intended to be group conversations which often move in a spiral, touching on topics in ways that may not be obvious at first. Our purpose is to bring back thoughtful dialogue in counterpoint to the shouting pundits of so-called debate on TV and radio. One need not be an academic or expert. We seek diversity of thought from people from all walks of life. ALL ARE WELCOME. …
I don't believe the East coast has a monopoly on intellectuals. I mean what smart person wouldn't want to live in this climate? But it can be difficult to find the smart, well-educated, cultured people here. So, if you think you fit that description and are interested in meeting other brainy people for friendship, dating, or networking, please join us. Suggest a meetup-arts, cultural events, live music, hike, book discussions, politics, etc.

Well I think the group name does most of the describing, but the goal here is for people relatively the same age, to pick great books, meet up once a month and discuss them. I want to create a casual and fun atmosphere so that like-minded people can get together, meet people out of their circles, and have the intellectual stimulation that's void from so many of the encounters I've had with people out here in LA. We'll pick from a range of books, and meet wherever the group decides. Ideally, we'd …

It's becoming increasingly clear that technology is reshaping our world in incredibly profound ways. Let's get together to discuss, think, argue and explore what this change means for our most deeply felt beliefs. What is the value/purpose/meaning of a human life in a world where we're increasingly outdated? I anticipate this group being a discussion/reading/movie watching group. I've got some authors I'd like to explore (Ray Kurzweil, Thomas Carlson, John Modern among others) and movies I want …

In my work as a clergyman, I find myself going back to the great philosophers constantly -- the Greeks -- e.g., Plato, Aristotle, the Romans -- e.g. Cicero, Marcus Aurelius, and any modern thinkers who thought is connected to the ancients. It occurs to me there may be others in the area who would like to read, study and discuss the foundations of the Western mind, and who don't want to drive in to the excellent sounding groups in Santa Monica. We meet monthly in my living room in Sherman Oaks. N …

Wikipedia states "a salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine taste and increase their knowledge of the participants through conversation. These gatherings often consciously followed Horace's definition of the aims of poetry, "either to please or to educate" ("aut delectare aut prodesse est"). Salons, commonly associated with French literary and philosophical movements of the 17th century and 18th centuries, were car …

We will be following the model recommended by The Dalai Lama Foundation for the study of "Ethics for the New Millennium" by His Holiness The Dalai Lama. Initially we are looking at a nine (9) week study of the book, but we may adjust that to suit the group's needs and schedules. The foundation notes: "We believe if we are to build a world in the twenty first century where every sunrise promises reduced suffering, increasing concord and more widespread peace, we must begin in a small way, at a pe …

A Matryoshka doll or a nested/nesting doll is a Russian doll or toy which features a set of dolls in decreasing sizes nested within one another. I chose this name for the group because I believe everyone is complex and has many layers to their personality and discussion can be a tool to explore the many facets that exist in others, thus creating true intimacy and camaraderie. I feel that is missing today. The Nested Doll is a group for those who really enjoy great conversation and deep and hone …
